A Liga Humanista Secular do Brasil (LiHS) é uma das maiores organizações humanistas da América Latina, com 3500 membros. A LiHS vai sediar o 20º Congresso Humanista Mundial da União Humanista e Ética Internacional (IHEU): ‪#‎WHC2017‬.

O congresso acontecerá no Centro de Convenções Rebouças, em São Paulo, de 3 a 6 de agosto de 2017.

O WHC2017 será um fórum singular para discutir o humanismo no Brasil e globalmente, cobrindo uma ampla gama de temas. É uma oportunidade de reunir pesquisadores, ativistas e intelectuais que querem discutir a relação entre estados e religiões em todo o mundo.

Andrew Copson, presidente da IHEU, diz que "A IHEU e nossas organizações membros de todo o mundo estamos muito satisfeitos por ir a São Paulo em 2017. No Brasil e em toda a América do Sul há algumas mudanças significativas de atitude em relação à ocorrência da religião e do secularismo. Cada vez mais pessoas se consideram não-religiosas, embora ao mesmo tempo estejamos vendo um endurecimento da religião conservadora e fundamentalista em muitas esferas. O Congresso (Humanista Mundial) é uma chance enormemente importante para humanistas, local e internacionalmente, aprenderem uns com os outros, compartilharem ideias e habilidades, e descobrirem como podemos trabalhar juntos melhor para defendermos os valores do humanismo e os princípios da democracia secular".

Declaração da União Humanista sobre o massacre contra Charlie Hebdo

Twelve people including two police officers, three cartoonists, and seven journalists have been killed today, with at least 5 other victims in critical condition. The gunmen, who were filmed shouting “Allahu Akbar” and “We have avenged the prophet” as they stormed the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, can be assumed to be Islamist terrorists responding to satirical images published in the magazine.

“The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) is appalled and deeply saddened by the attack on the offices of the magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France, today.

This is an horrific and profoundly illiberal attack. It is an act of Islamo-fascist terrorism, aimed at silencing freedom of expression about religious beliefs, and about Islam in particular.

No person who genuinely recognises the humanity of their fellow citizens, or who is remotely interested in the good of society at large or for any section of society, could ever justify this terrorism. Reading words and seeing images that satirise your beliefs is as far removed from a warrant to murder as it is possible to get.

Europe has a tradition of humanism, in which both freedom of expression, and freedom of thought and belief, including freedom of religion, are respected and upheld in law. To criticise beliefs, including through satire and ridicule, does not contravene others’ freedom of belief. Rather, criticism is essential to freedom of expression. Murder on the other hand is the ultimate nullification of all a person’s freedoms and being.

It is our true hope that Europe will neither bow to this violence, nor rise to it. We will not be provoked into an equal savagery. We will resist all terror, and we will defend freedom of thought and expression: essential values for free and meaningful lives.”
